Welcome

This blog is set up for the students and families of Southeast Elementary School in Howell, Michigan. It's purpose is to share the artistic achievements of the fifth grade classes by showcasing their art work.

To begin, I would like to thank Mr. Gorton (our technology teacher) for helping the fifth graders research information to deepen their understanding of this lesson.

In this lesson students researched the art of Greek vase painting dating from 600-408 BC. After researching the art, students created a narrative scene depicting Greek life. Students were given the choice of two techinques to use representing the black-figure or red-figure style of vase painting.

The posts within this blog will tell you what the students have learned and the creative processes used in designing their vases. I encourage you to spend some time viewing this blog and I hope that you will be inspired to comment on their hard work.

Thank you and enjoy!

Bringing the Past to Life

The culture developed by the ancient Greeks may have ended more than 2,000 years ago, but many of their ideas still live on today. Modern American politics, science, language, and drama are based on early Greek concepts. Painted pottery is one of the few forms of art that survived the fall of ancient Greek civilization. The narratives and designs painted on ancient Greek pottery can teach us about the culture and daily lives of the ancient Greeks.

The Enduring Idea or Big Idea in this lesson is culture. All art mirrors life. It is a reflection of the artists' construction of meaning about their life and times. The essential question is: In what ways were vases used in Ancient Greece?

In this lesson, students will learn about the culture of ancient Greek civilization and contrast and compare it to their own lives. This interdisciplinary lesson teaches students to use math in order to create their vases, technology with computers to research information and an Elmo document camera to present the information they have learned. Mixing art education with content areas brings meaning and value to learning. The interdisciplinary approach of engaging students in creative expression along with content areas helps students construct knowledge and develop real-life skills that will last a lifetime. I hope you will be able to see examples of this as you read our blog.

This lesson correlates with the following Michigan Content Standards and Benchmarks for Visual Arts:
1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4
2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6
3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5
4.1, 4.2, 4.3
5.1, 5.4

This lesson correlates with the National Content Standards for Visual Arts:
1. Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes
2. Using knowledge of structures and functions
3. Choosing and evaluating a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas
4. Understanding the visual arts in relation to history and cultures
5. Reflecting upon and assessing the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others
6. Making connections between the visual arts and other disciplines

This lesson correlates with the Common Core State Standards:
Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
CCSS.ELA-Literarcy.RL.5.7. Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth, poem).

I hope you enjoy the work our Southeast fifth graders did. They would love to read your comments, so be sure to post a word or two.
Thank you, Mrs. Guetschow

Mrs. Kincaid's class

I am using the hydria for my vase because I think it is the prettiest vase of the three vases. The hydria was used to store water in. I am using the red-figure style because I think it will work best with my design. The red-figure style is when the drawing is red and the vase is black.
By Samantha

The first Olympic Games were started in Greece. They were first held in 776B.C. to honor the Greek god Zeus. The athletes would win a crown of olive branches. Something else that started in Greece was democracy. Democracy began in 508B.C. Democracy means rule by the people. Only male citizens voted. I used an amphora. I picked it because it had a good design and it was just me. What was really cool was that last year we didn't really learn about Greek mythology and I got to learn stuff I didn't know before. Greek vases are important because of their history. They show us how people lived back then. We should appreciate that.
By Alaina

My vase is a hydria. It was used for storing water. I picked it because I thought it looked the most complicated. I am drawing Spartans in a tournament because I think the Spartans looked cool.
By Lewis

I am using an amphora. An amphora was used to store oil in. I picked an amphora because it looked like the hardest one to do and I like challenging myself. My design is a Spartan. I like how the Spartan design looks and I like Michigan State, so that is why I picked it.

In 472 B.C., Greek theaters became popular. Audiences would see jugglers and magicians and plays. Actors wore masks to show the audience if they were happy or sad.

The first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. They were held every 4 years to honor the great Zeus. A crown of olive branches was the prize. Democracy began in Ancient Greece in 508 B.C. Democracy means ruled by the people and male citizens were the ones to vote. The start of the classical period was in 500 B.C. They called it the classical period because they made a lot of art and used their imagination to design buildings. Greek theaters became popular in 472 B.C. They would see jugglers juggle and magicians do magic. Masks were always used for making the audience think they were sad or happy.

I am making a hydria. The hydria was used for storing water. I picked it because I thought if I made the amphora I wouldn't have enough room to draw what I wanted to.  A year ago, my Grandmother gave me "A Child's Introduction to Greek Mythology" because she had already given me the Percy Jackson books and I guess she thought it would help me understand those stories better. I am more interested in this lesson because of the book. I find all the mythological creatures interesting because I like animals.
By Nola

I am using a hydria because it is one of the biggest vases. That way I can put a lot on it. A hydria was used to store water. For my drawing, I am putting Jason's coin from The Heroes of Olympus Series of books. I like the coin because whenever Jason flipped the coin either a sword or a triton would appear. Those symbols represent Greek mythology to me.
By Domenic

A hydria was used to carry and store water in. I used it because I like big things and I thought it would be cool. I have a Spartan on my vase because it tells about what happened in Greece long ago. I am enjoying this project. It is really fun. I like drawing patterns and shapes in the same order. Greek vases always had patterns at the top and bottom, so it's fun for me.
By Trinity

A hydria was used for storing water. It was a very important vase. If they couldn't store water in their homes life would be more difficult. It was my favorite vase. I picked it because of how big it was. The space was large and fit the design I wanted to do. I learned that vases tell stories and I learned a lot about what ancient Greece was like back then.
By Carson

I picked an amphora because it had a lot of space to draw in. An amphora was used for general storage and it often had oil in it. One of the things that I learned about Greek life was that only men could be actors in plays. They would wear costumes to act the part of a woman. I thought that was interesting because I'm interested in the theater and I've been in a couple of plays.

The first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. The Olympic Games were held to honor the Greek god Zeus. If the athletes won something, they would get a crown of olive branches. Democracy began in Greece in 508 B.C. Democracy means ‘ruled by the people’ and only men could vote.

I am using an amphora. It was used for storing oil. I thought it was the prettiest of all the choices we had. I am using red-figure design because I like the black background. It makes the drawing pop out.
By Kylie

I originally started with an amphora, but it really ending up looking like a hydria. It's funny how you do one thing and it turns out like another. A hydria was used to store water in. In this lesson I learned that the Greeks were attacked by the Romans. The art work was taken and a lot of their culture was destroyed. The art on their vases told a story. Because we have some of their vases we know about their culture. The Greeks had democracy. It's important to us, otherwise some of us could be ruled by a king, but we get to vote.
By Ryan

I used black-figure design. I picked it because I thought it would look cool with the Spartan helmets. I knew I could draw a good Spartan helmet so I picked that for my design. I am using an amphora because I liked the shape of it a lot. It was used to store liquids. I really like history and stuff so this lesson fits me.
By Spencer

The Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. every 4 years. The Olympic Games honored the great Greek god, Zeus. The athletes won a crown of olive branches if they had done well. The Democracy began at 650 B.C., a little after the Olympic Games. The word ‘Democracy’ means “ruled by the people.”  The men of Greece would vote how states should run.  The start of the “Classical Period” began in 500 B.C. The people of Greece would call this the “Classical Period” because there was a lot of interest in art, imagination, and buildings. The Classical Period ended at about 323 B.C. Greek theaters became popular at about 472 B.C. The people that audiences would see would normally be magicians and jugglers. There were also plays. Actors would use special masks to tell if they were either happy or sad.

I used a hydria because it looked like it was the hardest to do and I wanted to make it complicated. A hydria was used for storing water. I liked learning about ancient Greece and making my own piece of history. The first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. They were held every four years in Olympia in honor of the mythological god Zeus. Democracy began in Athens in 508 B.C. The only people who voted were the male citizens. The term democracy means ‘ruled by the people.’ The Classical Period was a time when there was a lot of interest in art, imagination and building. This happened especially in the city-state Athens.

I used a hydria. A hydria was used for storing water. I picked it because I liked the shape. I learned that the Greeks would play games and whoever won would win a crown made of olive branches. I loved this lesson because it was fun and I learned how to draw different things like a Spartan and Spartan helmet.

I used an amphora and it's used for storage. I picked it because I thought the handles and the vase were cool. I liked this lesson because it is about an old kind of art that's still around today and we can bring out our own artistic style in our drawing. We each got to embrace our own interests. I learned what all the vases were used for and what red-figure design is.
By Chris

I used a krater. I picked it because I thought it was the most interesting looking vase. Also, it was used to mix water and wine and that's a bit like chemistry and I'm interested in chemistry. That's another reason why I picked the krater for my vase. My design is about a war between mythological gods and creatures. Poseidon, Artemis and Pegasus are in the drawing. They are fighting a dragon. I used black-figure design because when we looked at ancient Greek vases I thought the black-figure design looked the best. In this lesson I learned more about Greek mythology and ancient Greek culture. I liked the lesson because we could use weapons in our drawings as long as they were used back in ancient Greece. Greek vases are important to us because they help us learn about the way people lived centuries ago.

I used a hydria. I picked this vase because it's an interesting pot. The hydria was used for storing water. I used black-figure design because I think it stands out better. I learned that there are different kinds of pots and each had it's own purpose. I also learned that the Greeks wore masks in Greek theaters to show people if they were happy or sad. I liked this project. It was fun.

Mrs. Park's Class

I am using a krater because I thought it was fancy and I like fancy things. A krater was used for mixing. The most interesting thing I learned about Ancient Greece was about the Olympics. I thought it was interesting because our Olympics are different and it was interesting to learn about what it was like back then.
By Morgan

The Olympics started in the year of 776B.C. and were held every four years. The Olympic Games honored the mythological god, Zeus. The prize the athletes won was a crown of olive branches. The year Greek theaters became popular was in 472B.C. The entertainment was to go and see plays, or magicians and jugglers. Masks were always used to show emotions like happy or sad to the audience.

I am using a hydria. It was used for storing liquids like water. I picked it because I thought it looked cool. I am drawing a chariot with a horse to show how they traveled. I learned that in the Olympics they would be rewarded with an olive branch crown for winning. Crowns today are made from gold and back then crowns were made from olive branches. It's interesting because it's different.

I am making a hydria. It was used for storing water in. I picked the hydria because I thought it looked the coolest. I am making a red-figure vase because I think it will look cool with my design.
By Savannah

I am using a krater because I thought it was cool. A krater was used for mixing water and wine. The art on Greek vases showed scenes about their lives. The Greeks used horses for travel. That's why I am drawing two horses facing each other. It looks like they are fighting. I think this lesson is fun because I have learned about ancient Greek culture.

I used a hydria. I picked it because I thought it was different from the others and I liked it. A hydria was used for mixing water and wine in ancient Greece. I learned that every vase tells a story and that is why they are important to us. I also learned that when someone would win the Olympics he would get a vase with oil in it. Oil was given because it was very expensive and very precious back then. It was valuable and could probably trade for a lot of money. I liked the lesson because I thought Greek culture was very interesting and different. I used red-figure design because I thought it would work better with my drawing.

I used a krater. It was used for mixing water. I picked it because it looked cool and the handles were cool. I liked how we could draw any design on the vases as long as it involved Greek culture. I think Greek vases are important because they tell us about the culture before the Romans ruined it. I used the black-figure design because I like black-figure better than red. The Olympic Games were first held in 776 B.C. The athletes were given a crown of olive branches for winning. The Olympics were held every four years to honor the Greek god Zeus.  Democracy started in Greece 508 B.C. and only male citizens could vote. The theater became popular in 472 B.C. They are on a chariot with a horse pulling it to show how they traveled. I wanted to draw this because I like horses and I thought it would look cool. I am using the black-figure style because I like the color black and I think my design will look better than if I did it using red-figure. I like this lesson because I like ancient Greek stuff. I like how they made their art. It looks different from anything I've seen before.

I made a hydria. I picked it because it looked the most challenging. It was used for getting and storing water. I used red-figure design on my vase because I thought it looked awesome. I liked this lesson because I learned a lot about ancient Greek culture and mythology. I also learned that they started the Olympic Games.

I used a hydria for my vase. It was used for storing and pouring water. I picked it because it was the biggest and I like to draw so I wanted a lot of space. I used the red-figure design because I knew it would make the people in my drawing pop out of the picture. In this lesson, I learned a lot about how the Greeks made their vases. I liked this lesson because I like learning about Greek history.

I used a hydria for my vase. A hydria was used for storing water. I picked the hydria because I liked the handles on it. In this lesson I learned about red and black figure design on ancient Greek vases. I thought it was interesting. I also noticed that we use patterns today that are on Greek vases. I put a farming scene on my vase. Some Greek vases had pictures of every day life on them, that's why I used a farm scene. The Greeks were very talented artists. I liked this lesson because we learned about the Greek culture.

I used an amphora for my vase. Amphora's were used for storing oil. I picked it because it can store things. I liked this lesson because you could pick your own vase and draw what you wanted on it. I learned that vases were used for storing things. Vases are important to us because they tell us stories.

I picked a hydria. It was used for storing water in. I picked it because it looked awesome and looked like the most complicated to draw. In this lesson I learned that the Greeks started the Olympic Games. That is cool because we still have the Olympic Games today. I liked this lesson because I learned a lot about ancient Greek mythology. The vases are important to us because if we had not found them we wouldn't know as much about the ancient Greek culture or how they lived back then.

I used an amphora. An amphora was used to store things in. I picked it because I don't like to have things laying around, so it made sense to me. Because of this lesson, I learned that the Olympic Games started in Greece and that the winners would wear a crown made from olive branches and get an amphora filled with oil. I think that's cool. I loved this lesson because I liked learning about the Greeks. We know a lot about them from the art work on vases. These vases are important because when the Romans came and washed everything out there was little left. The vases taught us about the Greeks and their culture.

In ancient Greece they used pots for different things, like getting and storing water or mixing liquids. This lesson was hard at first, but then it got easier. I liked the lesson because I learned about ancient Greece. I used a little bit of black-figure design, but mainly I used red-figure. I picked red-figure when I saw that it looked better on my vase.
